The Horseshoe Crab Project

To fight the Covid-19 pandemic, 14 billion doses of vaccines are needed. Yet to make vaccines safe, almost all drug manufacturers still rely on the blood of the horseshoe crab, a threatened, keystone species. Up to 500,000 horseshoe crabs are bled every year to make an endotoxin test called Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL). But there is a synthetic alternative to this test called recombinant factor C (rFC) that is more sustainable and more consistent. Adoption of rFC is possible, today.
